Scala

The origin of Scala goes back to the IV century A.D., when some Roman noble families running away from Rome overrun by Barbarians were shipwrecked in this area and could not complete their journey to Constantinople. These Patricians were accepted by some Piacentini aborigines who lived here, but chose to settle on the hills above the Coast, i.e. Scala. Later these newcomers founded Ravello and Amalfi, thus the core of the glorious Marine Republic of Amalfi came into being (A.D. 839).
Traces of past importance of Scala can still be seen in the Cathedral, in some Romanesque or Byzantine churches, in some buildings of noble families and in some ruins such as those of the defence walls, the St Eustace Basilica, the Castle in Pontone, etc.
Scala is also the native Country of Fra Gerardo Sasso who founded the Order of the Hospital Workers of Jerusalem or St John's Hospital, which is known nowadays as the Sovereign Order of the Knights of Malta.
